If you are a regular to these pages for sure you will know the Colombres Rally organized by Moto Club Indianos, which perhaps is new to you is the event called North of Spain Rally. In this article, I will try to explain it to you.
After years holding a prestigious Internacional Rally in the beautiful Asturian town of Colombres, the club members decided to take the risk and go out of the Peaks of Europe area to show the west part of Asturias to all its friends. After a first modest edition -four days- this year, bearing in mind the previous experience and the expectation shown by the participants, the event has grown to a complete week.
The concept is very simple. Daily routes on classic motorcycle focused not only on the pleasures of covering the beautiful Asturian sceneries but also a big importance is placed on cultural discovery.
On the second of October, this edition started with a route that would take us from Colombres to Cangas de Narcea, the place that would serve us as the base camp for the coming days. A lively trip was prepared to cross the province east-west combining sea and mountain avoiding of course motorways and big cities. We had a cultural halt in the Monastery of Santa Maria of Valdediós to admire an excellent example of Pre-Romanesque architecture. As per usual, the moto club provides an outdoors lunch to recover and keep on enjoying the passion without losing time, needless to say, that the meal is one of the strengths of this event and our friends enjoyed local products in quantity and quality.
After a long day on the saddle the State-run hotel of Corias, rewarded as the best rural hotel of Spain, would receive us with the luxury and professionalism that this type of establishment can give. Speaking about culture this ancient Monastery not only offers an extremely comfortable stay with Spa, swimming pool etc., but also it has a very interesting archaeological excavation, a fantastic library and some other surprises that make it an unforgettable experience.
A night of rest in such marvellous place makes us ready for the first route in the Asturian west that would take us to nice seaside villages like Luarca and Puerto de Vega to return to the hotel crossing some of the finest mountain passes in the province. It was clear that our participants enjoyed the lonely roads and the countless bends.
The weather is co-operating with clear skies and summer temperatures that raise the spirits. The supper in the big dining room makes it clear, everybody is enjoying each minute of the experience.
For the second day, we headed to Galicia, to be precise to the Ancares shire where the roads are very demanding. Today's route is for the bravest, a difficult combination of roads and a challenging navigation due to the lack of signalling. Fortunately, the moto club provides you not only with well-prepared route-sheets, so that you ride at your own rhythm, but also the route is signaled with arrows for a major tranquillity. Our destination today is the remote village of Piornedo declared Historical-Artistic Ensemble where you will be able to admire the traditional houses with his roofs of straw and his stone walls. A trip to the past in motorcycles of another era, very appropriate. Don't you think?
Totally knackered we want to receive the brilliant hotel's personal treatment and then we will be ready for the next route that on this occasion places the stress on Nature since we are going to have the opportunity of crossing the Muniellos forest with our motorcycles. An experience that I would recommend to you all reading this article because it is not possible to describe only with words. We are in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and to know more about what it means we stop at the Interpretation Centre where we can acquire a broader knowledge of this magnificent oak forest.
The cherry on the cake would come in the shape of the last route in the Asturian West that leads us to cover the Oscos shire and Taramundi where the opportunities to learn about the traditional culture are so many that one day will not be sufficient, which leaves us with the desire to repeat next year. Of course, the roads in the whole territory are a real biker paradise. Today's weather has put us to test, but the smiles in the participants' faces clear up all doubts, nothing is going to ruin our experience.
With participants coming from Scotland, England, Wales, Ireland, Canada, Alemanía and of course Spain, you could think that it is difficult to please everyone, but the motorcycle connects us in a way that you, dear reader, know perfectly. Simply by stopping along one of these wondrous motorcycles is enough to initiate a conversation on the history of the motorbike, how was it restored, to whom it belonged to, and all the anecdotes that it accumulates on its record.
Of course, in these rallies, there are incidents with the motorcycles and not all participants finish the route, but there is nothing to worry about, the moto club provides breakdown service and tools to put you on the road as soon as possible. Undoubtedly, one of the best moments of this event is seeing the participants helping each other to repair all sorts of flaws that for many of us, are out of our mechanic skills. These motorcycles do not only carry you but also give you many lessons.
It is the last day at the Parador and we all concur that we do not want to leave, only the idea of another week of routes in Colombres prevented us for chaining ourselves to the hotel lobby. During our stay, we also had the opportunity to savour the regional cuisine, an additional bonus that complements the cultural experience with the culinary element.
We say goodbye with the promise of coming back and now we begin our return to Colombres pulling over to contemplate another jewel of the Asturian Pre-Romanesque, San Pedro de Nora and another stop later at the Beach of Rodiles in the middle of the Villaviciosa' Stuary Natural Reserve.
In short, a fantastic experience with a touch of distinction that has turned out to be a success and leaves us with a good taste in our mouths. New sceneries and new friends are always the final rewards that you get out of these rallies and in this case, the award was worth it.
